Prenatal Drug Exposure

In this video, Dr. Robin Gurwitch explains the impact of prenatal drug exposure on the development of children. Prenatal drug exposure alters the ‘wiring’ of the brain. Children are at higher risk for learning disabilities, developmental delays, sensory issues and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. As infants, these children are often very sensitive to stimulation and transitioning from one activity to another. Dr. Gurwitch offers resource parents methods and techniques to comfort such infants and helps resource parents recognize infant cues signaling over-stimulation vs. desire for engagement. For the older child, Dr. Gurwitch offers ways in which families can cope with unique behavior issues: difficulty minding and listening, impulsivity, defiance, and the ‘strong willed’ nature. Tips are also offered for helping schools improve outcomes for kids.
