Online Training

Empowered to Connect provides brief pre-recorded videos and articles designed for parents and caregivers whose children have experienced adverse childhood experiences, stress, and maltreatment. The training resources offer strategies for effective parenting and relationship building. Most of the materials feature the late Dr. Karyn Purvis, one of the developers of Trust Based Relational Intervention (TBRI) and Empowered to Connect Co-Founder Michael Monroe.  

New foster care applicants may complete their required pre-service training on this site. To get started, please contact your Child Welfare (CW) Specialist for access.

This platform also offers a variety of online training courses to help you meet your ongoing in-service training requirements with topics focused on the unique needs of children in care and the families who support them. Each course includes a brief quiz and typically counts as one hour of training credit. Be sure to print your certificate of completion after each course and share it with your CW Specialist.

Cost: ** DHS provides 12 pre-paid online in-service training hours through Foster Care & Adoptive Community (FCAC) or Foster Parent College (FPC) each year for DHS and Tribal foster, kinship, and adoptive parents. To access your 12 hours of training, please go to the National Resource Center website. Then click on the link for Foster Parent College or Foster Care and Adoptive Community. You will need your foster care contract number that you will need to obtain from your worker. 

You cannot be reimbursed if you enroll directly on the FCAC or Foster Parent College websites and pay for your training hours. These paid training hours are not available to resource parents providing Therapeutic Foster Care or care through a contracted agency. Families should discuss in-service training options with their contractor agency. 

FCAC Training offers 154 courses, with new topics added continuously. This is a national site and there is a fee for each training on this website. Certificates are immediately generated with the passing of a course test. Certificates may be emailed or downloaded directly to your computer and printed out.

Cost: $49 per year

This website offers +70 online trainings in English and +20 in Spanish.  Courses are available 24/7 and cover topics like trauma-informed care, behavior management, and parenting strategies.

This site provides over 250 hours of in-service training designed to help foster families meet the diverse needs of children and youth in care. Each course specifies the number of credit hours it provides, and participants must meet the minimum time requirement to earn credit.

To receive a certificate, participants must complete the training, confirm they took it themselves, meet the time requirement, and list four things they learned from the course. Certificates are printable upon completion.

There is so much to understand about adoption – loss and grief, attachment, trauma, therapeutic parenting, the impact of race and cultural differences, the role of the biological family after adoption, and so much more. The Oklahoma Adoption Competency Network (OACN) is a statewide effort to come together – foster and adoptive parents, adoptees, biological families, and adoption professionals – to learn, discuss, and support each other in doing our best to support our children and families from adoption in Oklahoma. Oklahoma Complete Health Children’s Specialty Plan offers free, live virtual trainings, to assist providers, partners, caregivers, foster parents and adoptive parents in providing quality care to our members. Various online courses for childcare and behavioral health.  Includes courses on enriching activities, nutrition, infant and pre-school mental health, and developmental topics.  To receive official credit for the courses, participants must pass a course exam and pay a processing fee to obtain a printable certificate. Courses are offered in English, Spanish, and Vietnamese.
